Step 05 Set up a Bit.ly account

Because Twitter has a 140 character limitation, URL shorteners are used to make long URLs short.

There are many to choose from but I use bit.ly.

Once you sign up for bit.ly you can see how many people are clicking on your links.

Signing up for bit.ly is easy.

Go to bit.ly
Click “Sign Up”
Create a username and NEW (not your Twitter) password for bit.ly.
Click “Sign Up”

Watch Bit.ly Video

You can now create shortened URLs at the bit.ly site. Look in the upper right corner to make sure that you are signed in.

I have heard that some people do not like using bit.ly because the .ly domain is for Libya.
If you agree, you can use bit.ly’s other URL shortner: http://j.mp
